Isis ‘Masha’ Springer, one of the many beneficiaries of Surrey Cricket Foundation’s programmes, was named the Young Person of the Year at Chance to Shine’s annual awards night this Friday at Lord’s.

10-year-old Isis (or Masha as she likes to be known!) participates in the Foundation’s South Norwood Street cricket sessions, which are delivered in association with Chance to Shine. In the two years since she has joined, Isis has demonstrated remarkable growth and dedication. Initially shy and unmotivated, she has blossomed into a confident and enthusiastic cricketer.

The Chance to Shine Street programme engages thousands of young people in underserved areas through free, weekly cricket sessions, providing a club they can call their own.

Prior to joining the session, Isis had limited experience with sports and a negative attitude towards cricket. However, through consistent participation and the supportive environment provided by the programme, Isis has overcome these challenges. Her skill level has improved significantly, and she now actively engages in and enjoys the sessions. Her dedication to cricket has extended beyond the Chance to Shine sessions too as she also takes part in Dynamos cricket.

From starting as the only girl at the session, Isis has been instrumental in creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging more girls to join the programme. By serving as a positive role model, there are now six other girls regularly attending alongside Isis each week.

“I don’t feel like ‘oh, I’m the best one out of everyone, I just feel like everyone is very talented!” shares Isis.

Isis’ transformation from a reluctant participant to a passionate and skilled cricketer is a testament to her resilience and the positive impact of the Chance to Shine programme. Her commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants makes her a deserving winner of the Chance to Shine Young Person of the Year Award for 2024.
