Surrey will be travelling to the south coast to round off their women’s London Championship, taking on Sussex at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy.
The Three Feathers sit third in the table on 28 points and are out of title contention, but will be hoping to sign off with a win and carry positive momentum into the approaching London Cup.
SURREY
Surrey have named a 12-player squad for the visit to Brighton, with Claudie Cooper captaining the side.
LAST TIME OUT
Surrey fell to a 43-run defeat at Chipstead against Kent in their previous 50-over outing.
Having won the toss and elected to field first, skipper Gordon would have been satisfied with her team’s efforts with the ball after reducing their visitors to 180 all out. Thea Brookes led the charge, claiming a brilliant 4/26, and was well supported by the likes of Priyanaz Chatterji (2/27) and Claudie Cooper (1/34). There were several starts for Kent’s batters but none of them could better Jodie Hobson’s 25 off 56 balls.
Surrey’s reply got off to a stumbling start as Kent immediately put the hosts under pressure, getting them 15/2 in the fifth over. Laxmi Johal (24) and Brookes (36) – Surrey’s top scorers – began to rebuild but once their promising 39-run stand was broken, Kent kept chipping away wickets at regular intervals, eventually bowling out Surrey for 137. Megan Sturge returned figures of 3/36, while equally impressive were Tilly Coleman (2/26), Olivia Barnes (2/27), and Coco Streets (2/15).
SUSSEX
The only London Championship that Sussex have featured in till now was against Kent, where they emerged victorious by 35 runs. Lucy Western’s diligent 77 off 115 balls pushed Sussex to 222/5 at the end of their 50 overs before Emily Spooner (3/38) and Millie Taylor (2/28) ensured that Kent finished comfortably short of the target.
Sussex were also recently crowned winners of the South Central Regional Cup, having won four of their five fixtures. Their opener, Izzy Collis, was the leading run-scorer in the 50-over competition with 198 runs at an excellent average of 49.5. The bowling charts were also topped by a Sussex player, Anna Buckle, who claimed nine wickets at an average of 8.9, with a best of 5/32.
