Surrey have today signed Azhar Mahmood, Jade Dernbach and Jim Troughton to the coaching staff full-time.
Dernbach returns to the Club as an Assistant Coach and his primary responsibility will be leading the Surrey Second XI as well as offering bowling expertise to the whole squad. Having retired in 2021 after a long and successful career with the Club, the former Surrey T20 Captain spent the 2022 season in north London with Middlesex as a Consultant Fast Bowling Coach.
Mahmood and Troughton joined Surrey as Interim Assistant Coaches in March 2022 ahead of the County Championship title-winning season and their positions are made permanent. Both have made a significant impact on the side since joining and will resume their work under the newly confirmed Head Coach Gareth Batty.
Mahmood will continue his Surrey duties alongside coaching stints with franchise teams in the Pakistan Super League, UAE T20 League and The Hundred. The former Surrey player also has international experience as a bowling coach with Pakistan.
Troughton is a former Head Coach of Warwickshire, who worked as a batting consultant to Somerset during the 2020 season. He enjoyed a fifteen-year career as a player, playing six One Day Internationals for England and captaining Warwickshire to the County Championship in 2012.
Alec Stewart, Director of Cricket at Surrey, said: “These appointments all bring great expertise and experience to the dressing room. Jim and Azhar have both been fantastic additions this year and have helped the players to continue their development and to improve their skillsets.
“Everyone at Surrey knows what you get from Jade Dernbach, he was an incredibly skilful and influential figure as a player and I know that we will see that continue in his coaching career. I’m looking forward to working with Head Coach Gareth Batty and the coaching staff to build and improve on the 2022 season as we aim to achieve more success at Surrey.”
