Surrey fell to a six wicket defeat to Yorkshire in a thrilling Second XI Championship match at York CC

Having declared overnight, Surrey set Yorkshire 408 to take victory in a topsy-turvy game at York CC.

An early breakthrough came courtesy of a peach of a delivery from Matt Dunn. The big quick bowler knocked Tom Fraine’s offstump out of the ground with a delivery that seamed in.

Noah Kelly and Yash Vagadia steadied the ship and began building an effective partnership with Vagadia looking particularly strong behind square both sides of the wicket.

The 109-run partnership was ended by another beauty from Matt Dunn. A length delivery seamed in late and took Vagadia’s off pole out of the ground and he departed for 58.

Harry Duke was the next man in to join Noah Kelly. Kelly’s innings was ended for an excellent 74 when he edged Tommy Ealham to Josh Blake behind the stumps. At 185/3, Will Bennison joined Duke and the pair really began to accelerate towards the target. Bennison in particular played some excellent strokes, despatching Seb Stuart-Reckling for six over midwicket.

The pair continued to hunt the target down, with both scoring a century on the way to a 203 run partnership to put the game firmly in the White Rose’s grasp.

Duke’s century came from 123 balls, while Bennison’s came from 90 balls – the right handed bat brought up three figures with a huge six into the leg side.

Bennison was well caught at slip by Fraine off the bowling of James Taylor for 106. However, Duke and Ahktar (7 not out), got Yorkshire over the line by six wickets late on the final day.
