Amy Gordon’s side beat Kent and Sussex with two measured performances in the Vitality Women’s T20 competition at Hove

GAME 1 VS KENT – SURREY WON BY 6 WICKETS

Surrey beat Kent by six wickets with seven balls to spare in their first match of the day.

Kent – who won the toss and elected to bat, ended the powerplay on 62/2 after Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones ran South East Stars teammate Darcey Carter out for 15 and Charlotte Lambert had Emily Thompson caught in the leg side by Priyanaz Chatterji for 1.

Captain Amy Gordon came on to bowl and took two quick wickets for the Three Feathers. Coco Streets was caught by the bowler after a few juggles for 19 before Jodie Hobson was caught at mid wicket by Chattererji for 2. Olivia Barnes was next to depart as she was bowled by Claudie Cooper attempting to sweep for 2. At the halfway mark, Kent were 72/5.

Bethan Miles got the sixth wicket as Izzy Kirby was caught at point after a leading edge for 1 to leave Kent 77/6. Amy Gordon took her third wicket as Ella Darlington was bowled for 14 with the score on 111 in the penultimate over.

Kent finished on 123/7 from their 20 overs, with number three Genevieve Jeer finishing with a classy 50 not out.

The five wickets in the opening 10 overs put the brakes on the Kent innings. Captain Amy Gordon finished her four overs with excellent figures of 3/14, with Claudie Cooper’s 1/19 from four overs helping Surrey control the Kent score.

Surrey openers Daisy Feast and Amy Gordon played cautiously at the top, taking the score to 22/0 in the fifth over before Feast was caught in the off side for 13.

Priyanaz Chatterji was next to depart, she was caught and bowled by Darcey Carter for 1.

Amy Gordon and Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones looked to rebuild the innings for Surrey. Skipper Gordon played the lead attacking role, with Blinkhorn-Jones playing the holding role. Boundaries were hard to come by for the pair, with the score 64/2 after 12 overs.

Gordon found the boundary seven times on her way to 47 before a mix up left the pair stuck at the same end, with Gordon ran out with the score on 84 in the 15th over.

Robyn Bentley added four before she was bowled by Daphne Pink with the score on on 92/4 after 15 overs.

Bethan Miles joined Maddie and the pair had the target within their sights.

Surrey got to the target of 124 with seven balls to spare. Blinkhorn-Jones finished with 26 not out, with Bethan Miles finishing 18 not out.

GAME 2 VS SUSSEX – SURREY WON BY 5 WICKETS

25 minutes after the first game finished, Surrey were back on to the field to face Sussex. Amy Gordon won the toss and elected to field first.

Anna Lewis picked up the first two wickets of the match. Izzy Collis departed in the fourth over, caught by Hannah Burridge for 2. Sussex’ Ella McCaughan made a quick-fire 25 but was caught in the covers by the skipper to leave Sussex 34/2 from six overs.

Sussex to score to 66 before Daisy Feast’s leg spin had Mary Taylor caught behind for 14.

The leg spin of Laura Bailey won the battle as Nancy Carter was stumped on 26 in the 13th over.

Sussex’s Mollie Adams (26 not out) and Chiara Green (18 not out) took the hosts to a competitive total of 120/4 from their 20 overs.

Surrey’s chase of 121 got off to a tricky start when Daisy Feast was bowled around the wicket by Chiara Green for 6.

Captain Amy Gordon was next to depart for 10 when she was pinned lbw by Daisy Gibb to leave the Three Feathers 17/2.

Kirstie White and Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones took the score to 40 before White was stumped off the bowling of Millie Taylor for 16 in the seventh over.

New batter Chatterji and Blinkhorn-Jones kept things ticking with the required rate the latter was bowled by a Daisy Gibb for 16 to leave Surrey 71/4 from 11 overs.

With 50 runs were required from 54 balls, Surrey had control of the chase. Chatterji and new batter Robyn Bentley took Surrey to 95 before Bentley was bowled by Millie Taylor for 18.

With 26 needed, Claudie Cooper joined Chatterji – who continued to play her shots to get Surrey towards the target.

Surrey got over the line with six balls remaining to make it two wins from two at Hove. Claudie Cooper (8 not out) supported Priyanaz Chatterji’s controlled unbeaten 39 to get Surrey the second win of the day.
