Women’s London Championship schedule

Surrey Women will defend their title in a new, revamped 50-over London Championship competition this summer against their local rivals in county cricket.

Hannah Jones’ side will begin the year with an Vitality Women’s T20 competition in late April & May before the 50-over London Championship takes over in June. In the London Championship, Surrey will come up against Kent, Essex, Middlesex and, for the first time, Sussex.

Domestic women’s cricket has undergone a major change in recent years due to the introduction of regional sides, representing centres of excellence around the country. South East Stars cover Surrey & Kent at that level, now considered the elite standard of domestic women’s cricket in England & Wales.

In order to ensure proud traditional counties still have meaningful cricket and to aid development for talented players, the London Championship was created in 2020. Sussex have entered the competition this year to provide more competitive cricket for counties in the South East of England.

After playing the Vitality Women’s T20 competition, the focus will shift to the 50-over format in June & July. Surrey will begin with a trip to Sussex before home matches against Kent & Middlesex at Chipstead CC & The Kia Oval respectively. They close out the competition at Essex.

Each win earns 10 points with bonus points awarded for batting and bowling performances. The side topping the table after all the teams have faced off once will be crowned as champions.

The date for this year’s London Cup, the annual T20 flagship fixture, has also been confirmed for the 23rd June at Middlesex’s Radlett CC. Surrey are the defending champions in both tournaments after an unbeaten shortened season in 2020, including a memorable London Cup win at The Kia Oval to kick off the domestic season in England.

Surrey Women Head Coach Jonathan Batty said: “It’s excellent news that Surrey Women will have competitive cricket in both T20 and 50 over cricket in 2021. The London Championship competition will provide another opportunity for our players to develop their 50-over skills and as defending champions, we’ll be looking to win it again.”

In order to abide by government guidelines, no entry will be permitted to any fixtures before 17th May. Rights to entry for matches following the 17th May will be communicated closer to the time.
