Surrey have named a squad of 13 for their crucial Vitality Blast South Group match with Kent Spitfires at The Kia Oval on Friday night.
With Sam Curran, Tom Curran & Jason Roy all in isolation after a Covid outbreak within the England camp, Will Jacks has been drafted into the international squad and is therefore unavailable for this fixture.
Kyle Jamieson’s glute injury sustained during the LV= County Championship draw with Hampshire has ruled him out of any further participation in his scheduled stay with the Club.
Ollie Pope remains unavailable with a thigh injury and Hashim Amla is out after taking several blows to his hand during his monumental effort to bat through the day at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday.
As cover for those absentees, big hitting 25-year-old Tim David has been drafted into the squad for the final two Vitality Blast matches.
David has represented Hobart Hurricanes & Perth Scorchers in the Australian Big Bash League and arrives at Surrey off the back of an impressive Pakistan Super League, in which he hit 180 runs in six innings for Lahore Qalandars. Speaking on his opportunity, David said: “I’m stoked with the chance to play for a county as big as Surrey and to get my first experience of playing in the Vitality Blast. It has been a busy few days since I got a call with the potential opportunity and I can’t wait to play at the Kia Oval tomorrow night hopefully in front of a big crowd.
“After finishing the PSL in the UAE recently, I decided to play some league cricket in Holland instead of flying back to Australia to quarantine and I am really excited that an opportunity has come up and hopefully I can have an impact for Surrey in their final few T20 Blast games.”
Surrey’s Director of Cricket Alec Stewart added: “With the loss of Kyle Jamieson to injury & Will Jacks to international duty, as well as the unavailability of Ollie Pope & Hashim Amla we wanted to try and cover off a middle order ball striker and fortunately we were able to secure the services of Tim David at very, very late notice.”
Surrey are currently third in the South Group with 13 points. However, we have played one more match than most of the sides around us and only have two group fixtures remaining. The top four in both groups will go through to the quarter-finals to be played in late August.
