Surrey Academy player Alex French has been named in the England Under 19 Test squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Fast bowler French joined the Surrey pathway at U14 level and was named in the Surrey Academy this year. The 16 year-old was part of the Surrey U18 side that won the Vitality U18 County T20 Boys Competition, taking 2/9 in the final.

French has represented the Surrey Second XI on five occasions, including snaring the wicket of former Surrey and England player Mark Stoneman in his first game for the Twos.

The 6”5 bowler plays his club cricket for Esher and joined Cranleigh School this year. His younger brother is also on the Talent Pathway in the Under 14 age group.

Chris Taylor, Head of the Surrey Talent Pathway, said “Alex is a terrific prospect and hits the deck hard. He’s got a brilliant attitude and is always looking to work and improve his game as much as he can.”

A 14-player squad has been selected for the series, which begins at Wormsley on Monday 8 July before the second Youth Test at Cheltenham from Tuesday 16 July.
