“I love cricket, it’s my favourite sport and I’d love to have a career in it!”

Brothers Naweed and Omaid today visited The Kia Oval as part of the Street Child United programme in association with Surrey Cricket Foundation.

They spent the day with staff from across the Oval Events Limited (OEL) business.

OEL is responsible for the logistical planning and delivery of successful events, both cricket and non-cricket, that happen at The Kia Oval.

The pair started the day by meeting with Director of Operations Alex Lewis, who introduced them to the work his team do. From there, they journeyed into the kitchens at The Kia Oval and got to learn from our chef’s about what their role entails.

After a wider tour of the ground, they met with various members of staff who taught them all about hospitality, service and conference and events at The Kia Oval.

Upon completion of a successful day’s work experience, Omaid shared his excitement of potentially playing at the Street Child United World Cup in India later this year, and said that he’d had a “fascinating” day and would love to pursue employment in the cricket industry.

He said: “I love cricket it’s my favourite sport and I’d love to have a career in it!”

Elliott Rousen, Inclusion and Diversity Officer at Surrey Cricket Foundation, said: “Today has been a tremendous day for both Naweed and Omaid and I think they both came away thinking cricket offers a career opportunity for them.

“I want to thank Alex Lewis and the team at Oval Events Limited for putting on such an engaging day, to Street Child United for their partnerships and to our sponsors at Ayer Associates for their support in helping deliver meaningful experiences like today.”

Omaid and Naweed are part of The Street Child United and Surrey Cricket Foundation programme. The programme is a free sport and mentorship programme, available to young people who have experienced life on the streets. Participants receive world class cricket training with Surrey coaches, engaging sessions on employability and careers.

They also have the potential to join Team England and travel to India in late-2023 for the Street Child United Cricket World Cup.

Street Child United helps organise teams in multiple countries, as well as international sports events to create engaging experiences for children living in street situations to gather. Street Child United works with organisations worldwide, to help build teams, trust, and new opportunities for a better world.

Naweed and his brother Omaid had previously joined us at The Kia Oval for the programme’s launch event alongside their football counterparts from Everton in the Community. To read more about that event, click here.
