LAST TIME OUT
Surrey travelled north to face Lancashire in their opening game as county champions. Having lost the toss, Surrey saw themselves on 77/4. However, Ben Foakes (76) and Jamie Smith (54) steadied the ship before Cam Steel scored his first Surrey century. Cam Steel’s unbeaten 141 was supported by Sean Abbott’s 42 to take Surrey to a competitive total of 442.
Surrey’s returning Abbott took 5/50 from 20 overs as Surrey’s relentless bowling attack managed to restrict Lancashire to 291, two runs short of the follow-on target. Ben Foakes scored an unbeaten 103 as Surrey declared on 292/6 from 65 overs.
Lancashire were given a target of 444 runs to score from 107 overs. Surrey were given hope when Luke Wells and Keaton Kennings got out in the 22nd and 23rd over. However, Josh Bohannan (108) and Steven Croft (56) stifled the Surrey bowlers. The teams shook hands in the 88th over with Lancashire on 247/3. Surrey took 12 points from the match, with Lancashire taking 9.
HAMPSHIRE
Hampshire kicked off their 2023 season in emphatic fashion with an eight-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire at the AGEAS Bowl. Seam bowler Mohammad Abbas impressed with the ball, taking 9 wickets in the match.
Hampshire provided the stiffest opposition to Surrey’s 2022 county championship title charge. James Vince’s side were on Surrey’s tail all season until two defeats in their final two games meant they were leap-frogged into second place by Lancashire.
